Member-Sponsored Gone in a Flash Contest
Details
Deadline: | Sep 30, 2019 |
Fee: | Free |
The theme and prompt of this contest is childhood, gone in a flash. Written in Flash.
Memories of childhood become more precious as we get older. They are often sources of comfort or nostalgia for a simpler time. We also hold on to our sad memories. Perhaps your memory is the moment you discovered an idea that illuminated you or you discovered the meaning of something crucial. Maybe it is that year a parent walked out of your life forever. Your first kiss at the home game behind the dugout.
Towns, houses, neighborhoods, objects, family rituals, the way the sun bloomed lazy in the morning on the farm, they are all in our childhood memories waiting for us. What comes back to you in fond or painful memory of childhood? When you think of writing for this contest, keep in mind this partial quote from the composer, author, and translator Paul Frederic Bowles:
“Because we don’t know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can’t even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not even that.”
Whether your childhood memory is joyful, sad or funny - an afternoon so vivid and wondrous or a year of bleak and lonely or that one family road trip gone haywire—let the quote guide you in writing. All interpretations on this theme will be accepted and carefully considered. I look forward to glimpsing these childhoods, wonderfully written and gone in a flash. Good luck!
